PYMNTS’ ongoing research into the U.S. restaurant industry strongly suggests that Panera and many of the other restaurants that are revamping their customer engagement strategies will likely become more competitive going forward.

We have been tracking consumers’ restaurant ordering habits since September 2020, and consumers’ interest in digital ordering features has not wavered between then and now. What can their continued enthusiasm for ordering online reveal about how restaurants might best engage with customers going forward?

Key findings:

  • 47% of restaurant guests use at least one loyalty program.
  • 57% percent of consumers who already use at least one restaurant’s loyalty program would spend more on food orders from other restaurants if the latter offered loyalty programs as well.
